Apple reimagines the iPhone experience with iOS 14
Cupertino, California - Apple today previewed iOS 14, offering the largest ever home page update with beautifully redesigned widgets and an app library, a new way to take advantage of the app store using app clips, powerful message reviews, and more.
The new tools provide timely information at a glance and can be installed in various sizes on any home screen page. Users can create a smart toolkit, which uses intelligence on the device to show the right tool based on time, location and activity.
Home screen pages can display custom widgets for work, travel, sports, entertainment and other areas of interest. The application library is located at the end of the home screen pages, and it is a new space to automatically organize for all user applications in one easy-to-navigate view, and intelligently displays applications that may be useful at the moment. Users can choose the number of home screen pages to easily display and hide them for faster access to the application library.
FaceTime calls, phone calls, and incoming Siri interactions take on a whole new small design that enables users to stay in the context of what they do. By supporting an image inside, iPhone users can now watch a video or make a FaceTime call while using another app.
"IOS 14 converts the most well-known elements of the iPhone experience, and uses it from the biggest update you have ever had on the home screen," said Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of software engineering. "With beautifully designed tools on the home screen and the library of apps that organize all of your apps and fast-detecting application clips, the iPhone becomes more powerful and easier to use.
A new way to discover apps using app sections
The app clip is a small part of the app experience designed to be discovered at the right moment. The app clips territory with a specific product or business, and loads within seconds to complete a specific task, such as renting a scooter, buying coffee, or filling out a parking meter. It can be easily detected and painted by scanning the new app clip code designed by Apple, 1 or by NFC tags and QR codes, or shared in messages or from Safari, all with its own security expected from apps.
Messages are essential to communicate with friends and family, and now it is easy to stay in touch and paint quickly to important messages. Users can pin conversations to the top of their message list, live thread threads easily with embedded bookmarks and replies, and further customize conversations by setting a group photo with an image or emoji. New Memoji options in messages are more comprehensive and varied with additional hairstyles, headwear, face covers and more.
Greener ways to explore and new guides on maps
Makes maps for navigation and exploration easier than ever with new biking directions, electric vehicle guidance, and guides. Biking directions take into account elevation, street busy, and whether there are stairs along the road. Vehicle electrical orientation adds charging stops along a planned path based on the current vehicle's charging and charger types. Guides are a great way to discover new restaurants, find popular attractions, and explore new reviews from reputable brands, including AllTrails, Complex, The Infatuation, Time Out Group, The Washington Post and more.
Improved privacy features for more transparency and control
All applications will now be required to obtain user permission before tracks. 3 Later this year, the App Store product pages will display summaries of self-reported privacy practices for developers that are displayed, simplified, and easy to understand. In addition, users can upgrade their existing login accounts with Apple, to choose to share their approximate location with app developers from their exact location when granting access to the app site, with more transparency in the app's use of the microphone and camera.
